Hi, I’m Nellig. I live in the UK.
My real name is Mary Gillender, but Nellig is easier to spell, more memorable, and makes for a snappier URL.
I didn’t go to design school.
For many years, I’ve earned my living as a translator working from Japanese into English. Along the way, I became fascinated by Japanese pottery and textiles, and started creating my own vaguely Japanese-style repeating patterns in Photoshop, using a crude method I'd figured out for myself.
Last year I discovered the Pattern Observer site run by Michelle Fifis, and by taking her excellent online course, the Ultimate Guide To Repeats, I learned how to do proper technical repeats in Photoshop and Illustrator.
My obsession with patterns has now reached such a pitch that I’ve come out of the closet as a surface pattern designer, and made my work available for licensing. I also do commissions.
